TOOLZ: GoPro Drops HERO 3 – "Black Edition" – 2.7K Video Camera for $400

Gotta say this little company keeps impressing me with it’s new products and product improvements…

The hip people at GoPro who brought you the first simple affordable and tiny HD action cams, then brought 3D to the masses with the GoPro 3D Hero System, and who most-recently added remote control GoPro camera operation from a smartphone app… have now thrown down the gauntlet of a 2.7K (2716 x 1440) mini-action camera w/ remote control for $400.00 in the form of the all-new GoPro HERO3: Black Edition Camera.

(*To be clear the 4K on the Hero3 is only at 12 f.p.s., so of little use for most of us.  However, it’s still capable of 2.7K at 30 f.p.s., so let’s just call it a 2.7K camera and avoid the obvious confusion.)

This new line of GoPro Hero 3 cameras coupled with the release of GoPro’s new and improved ProTunes firmware is yet another game-changer for indie filmmakers.  Here’s the quick specs:

  • 2.7K footage
  • waterproof remote control
  • 1080p/60fps or 720p/120fps slo-mo
  • smartphone wi-fi control
  • time-lapse
  • 12MP stills

I think that’s an incredible value for only $400.00.   And if you’re on a tighter budget or you don’t need all the bells and whistles of the GoPro HERO3: Black Edition, there’s the even more affordable  GoPro HERO3: Silver Edition ($300) and the White Edition ($200.00).

Check out some of the breath-taking footage you can now capture for bargain basement prices:
