I grew up in Madonna’s hey day, so feel like I’ve seen alot of what Lady Gaga’s done already in one form or another. Which is not to say that I don’t think she’s a brilliant entertainer in her own right, just that she’s following in the well-worn footsteps of the original pop music shock queen, Madonna – who arguably followed in the footsteps of performers like Mae West and Marilyn Monroe, if you really wanna dig deeper.
And no surprise here- this new Lady Gaga video entitled, Marry the Night is stirring up controversy and debate. I think Marry the Night is Lady Gaga’s equivalent to Madonna’s very provocative shocker coffee-table book – aptly entitled Sex, which came out at the very height of Madonna’s exhibitionist period in the early 90’s. (See one of the few tamer photos I could actually show on the right. Yes it’s really raunchy.)
What do you think? Is this the video of a true filmmaking artist? A desperate exhibitionist? A pop icon ahead of her time? A Madonna copy-cat? A tongue and cheek joke on us all? – Or perhaps a little of all of the above?
…I’m not really sure, but we all clicked on it and I think that’s all that really matters in Gaga-land- that we never stop watching.
